Money makes the world go round, right? No, it is humanity that keeps it spinning. (Zia Askari, writer, New Delhi, India) Some of us were privileged to give the gift of humanity again last Sunday, November 19, 2006.
Tatyana Hysa, who turned 92 Sunday, 11/26/06 is in failing health and needs oxygen 24/7. She wanted a motorcycle ride again, "to revive an old memory" she said, from when she was 21 years old.
A group of friends, relatives, Hospice health care aids, and members of Clearwater H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group), went on her long-anticipated journey on a beautiful Sunday morning. Bob Fletcher, owner of Fletcher's Harley Davidson, took Hysa in the side car of his motorcycle.
"When I was 16, I drove an Indian Scout," she said. "It was better than riding a horse, less bumpy. When you ride a motorcycle, it's like you are riding on air." Tatyana's family members were here from other areas of the U.S. to help her celebrate her birthday, and to enjoy the ride with us.
During the planning stages of preparing Hysa for her "big ride," I learned from Social Worker Angel Reale on the Pearl Team of The Hospice of The Florida Suncoast, that "Tatyana is so excited, she hasn't been able to sleep all week! It adds to her quality of life," Reale said about the ride. "At this age, it's hard to have physical capabilities to do what you want to do. Life should be lived to its fullest."
"She moved to the States at age 9. She was a pianist and a piano teacher. She also was one of "seven leading ladies" who helped raise funds to establish Ruth Eckerd Hall.
About her special ride, Hysa said "it was wonderful..."I'm in heaven. I want to buy one."
Until the next time....
